A Night Divided

The government says they will not block passage to the west. A day later, a wall is built while the city sleeps. It is 1961, East Berlin and the infamous Berlin Wall is built. Twelve year old Gerta, her mother and oldest brother Fritz lives on the east side, controlled by the Soviet Bloc, while her father and second brother Dominic had gone across two days ago to search for an apartment and planned to return today, but now the family is separated in two.

Gerta makes a discovery that startles her: a bunker under a house. Well, that's not the surprising part. Its the fact that right above them is the "deal strip" the 100metres long of barbed wire and bombs, which they need to cross before reaching West Berlin. As it dawns apon her that her father had tried to get Gerta to dig her way out, Fritz's enrolment into the army draws closer, but everyone knows that going into the army is death, and Gerta and Fritz work furiously at the tunnel. Will they succeed?
